The Hertfordshire Orchard Initiative has been busy helping us to draw up a detailed plan for our community orchard at Heartwood Forest. We are planning how it will be laid out, where paths will go and most important of all, which varieties of fruit trees we will plant.
We want to create a traditional orchard with as many local varieties of apple, pear and plums that we can find. So far we have varieties such as the Hitchin Pippin and the Brownless Russet but we want to hear from you about any local varieties that you recognise as being local to Sandridge village or Hertfordshire.
Let us know by leaving a comment here or email heartwood@woodlandtrust.org.uk if you think you can help.
We are hoping the plan will be ready in time for this year’s Apple Day on Thursday 21st October and are planning for the very first trees to be planted. There will be more details nearer the time but get the date in your diary and help create Heartwood’s community orchard.
Delighted to come across this blog as we used to live at Nomansland Farm! If I can help at all with fruit trees please let me know; we help support Community Orchards through Common Ground.
