Heartwood Forest Wildlife Notes
February 2012
After the snow early in the month we had an early taste of Spring by the middle of the month. When visting after the snow had gone, I was pleased to see that at least one of the Short-eared Owls was still around. It was engaged in an aerial dispute with one of the resident Kestrels to the north of Langley Wood. The green shoots of the Bluebells are showing well in the mature woods, indicating another early flowering season this year. Plan your visit for late April rather than May.
Later in the month the temperature soared to near record levels prompting territorial mating behaviour from Buzzards and Skylarks in particular. Chris Shortall was out collecting insects another sure sign of Spring. A Short-eared Owl perched obilgingly on a fencepost.
The new car park has opened and I was pleased to see that a ‘scrape’ has been created in the middle, which will hopefully hold enough water to attract wildlife, maybe even Mallard, in due course.
If you see any interesting wildlife at Heartwood Forest please let me know so I can report it in these notes.
