Every year, on the day after Boxing Day – 27th December – volunteers run a Santa Hunt in Wick Wood, St Albans.

It costs 50p per child, with money raised going to the Woodland Trust.

It runs from 10am-12 noon and involves a hunt around the woodland, finding tokens which the children then exchange for a modest chocolate treat.

PLEASE NOTE – This is NOT at Heartwood Forest. It takes place at Wick Wood, St Albans, on Marshal’s Drive – postcode AL1 4RE. Booking is not necessary – just turn up! All ages welcome!

The Oxfam Herts Hike – Saturday 23rd September 2017

A message from the organisers of the Herts Hike:

The idea of Herts Hike is to help people enjoy and discover the beautiful countryside close to St Albans and to ask them to help others who have less than us by donating to an Oxfam project. This year we’re helping Oxfam to get drinking water to villages in Kenya.

Information is now online at www.oxfamstalbans.org and we will be delighted to hear from walkers and also volunteer helpers. In the meantime please email the team on hertshike@gmail.com if you would like to know more.

Our walkers have a choice of routes, typically 3, 5, 8, 14 or even 20 miles. The three and five mile walks take place inside Heartwood Forest and the longer walks are circular routes taking in villages further north such as Wheathampstead, Ayot St Lawrence and Kimpton. Walkers can decide on the day which route they want to do.

All the Herts Hike routes start from the Scout hut at Heartwood Forest. It is accessible by bus or car, and parking is available at the Heartwood Forest Car Park. All routes are waymarked and key points are marshalled; written instructions are also provided. People walk the route at their own pace following the signs. Starting times vary, eg for the popular 8 mile circuit it is any time between 9am and 1:30 pm. The longer distance walkers need to start by 9:30 am.

Each year the Oxfam Herts Hike fundraises for an Oxfam project in the developing world. Walkers can collect sponsorship money or make a personal donation to the project. This year we will be supporting Oxfam’s water projects in Northern Kenya. Having clean drinking water in the villages saves many women and girls from making long journeys to rivers to collect water. This river water is very unhealthy often bringing diseases.

We welcome walkers from local schools, youth groups, community organisations and businesses as well as individuals, families and friends. Walkers from youth groups should be accompanied by adults eg parents or leaders. There is a parental permission slip for under-18s if they are walking unaccompanied by an adult.

We welcome help on the day at Walk HQ and at the various checkpoints around the route. The previous day, Friday 22 September, we need volunteers to walk the routes in teams putting up signs.

Best wishes from the St Albans Oxfam Campaigns Group

Sue and Hilary

Last Sunday we had a public planting day at Heartwood Forest. The weather wasn’t bad at all, with the sun shining most of the time, but it did get rather cold!

Over 500 people turned up during the day, and 5,850 trees were planted.

It wasn’t the easiest place to plant, with quite a few stones in the ground and a layer of grass to get through before hitting the soil, but nobody seemed to mind.

A huge “Thank you” to all those who joined us on the day and helped to plant so many trees!

We also need to say a special “Thank you” to our wonderful young supporter, Síofra, who came along again, laden with her home-made brownies and other very tasty goodies, and raised a fantastic £61 for Heartwood Forest by selling them! Well done and thank you so very much!
